Ruining 4/20
This administration has no end to their overreach even when it comes to the sacred 4/20 holiday. Weather you spent the holiday higher than a plane in the sky, faking a smile in the front pew, or forgot about it entirely; this administration tried to ruin it. This all began with executive order that declared a national state of Emergency at the Southern border. Trump claimed there was a crisis so he could enact the Insurrection Act and "protect our borders", but it made people worried for a multitude of other reasons.
The original executive order essentially asked his advisory committee to review the need for the Insurrection Act. To be clear, this is not the same as Martial Law however similar the two seem. Martial Law is where the military replaces police rule completely. The Insurrection Act is the baby step before that which lets the military help the police out but not replace civil administration completely. In theory it is a test, to see how the public will react to the news. You can imagine the concern that arise as Trump dropped this executive order, but it would take more than just a committee ruling and Trump's stupidity. The committee ruling would have to be voted in favor by Pete Hegseth and Kristi Noem as Defense and Homeland Security Department Heads. It is predicted they will not pass it due to the public opinion of them being so poor. This hope is not the only thing Democrats are putting their faith in, the Judges are already fighting back.
Judge James Boasberg is fighting against the Trump admin to keep them in check. He hasn't targeted this specific executive order but he came for another big one. He was the federal judge who help order the return of the planes they sent to El Salvador. When the admin did not follow the orders, they doubled down. The administration did it again on April 20th from an ICE detention center in Texas. They got a few buses loaded up at ICE Bluebonnet Detention Center in Anson Texas and sent them to the Abilene Airport, 30 miles away. They were followed by local news in media vans behind those that left the prison. The ALCU was quick to an injunction on the buses leaving, so they turned them around in preparation of being informed to send them back. This put us into a Constitutional crisis because the Executive branch blatantly ignored the Judicial which is supposed to keep it in check.
This means the administration is in criminal contempt for unlawfully detaining American citizens without due process. Judge Boasberg said he would find the individuals responsible for the deportation and have them held in contempt. Here is the possible problem with that, Trump can just pardon the offense and have the person released. This administration continues to try and find ways to squash hope where it is forming. Many have been asking legal scholars, "What do we do when this may happen?", and there isn't really an answer now but there is somewhat precedent. The closest thing we have to reference is the pardon Nixon got from Watergate but the comparison is reaching at best. There has never been a time in history a President has kept such stupid people on their staff after they make such huge public blunder. Hegseth has been in two scandals with Signalgate alone, he has released two separate plans to bomb Yemen. This set the standard that, there is no punishment for the time being, when it comes to breaking protocol and putting the nation at risk. As long as the specific individual continue to pledge allegiance to Trump he won't hold them accountable in his cabinet. Once a political leader is tainted with public distrust, publicly nobody will want to work with you. None of his cabinet cares though because with the power he possesses they do not think they can be touched if they do break the law. This is unless you can shoot someone point blank in the middle of 5th Avenue and not lose a single vote, not a cult though right?
